Il a commencé sa carrière à titre d'économiste à la Banque du Canada en 1991 ou il a travaillé au Département des Recherches et au Département des Relations internationales. Il s'est joint au Conference Board du Canada en 1998 où il a d'abord travaillé au sein du Département des études internationales. Il a alors travaillé en collaboration avec les Ministères des Finances de la Tunisie, du Maroc et de l'Ukraine. De 2001 à 2013, Mario a dirigé le Centre études municipales du Conference Board, conduisant alors des prévisions économiques pour les Régions métropolitaines de recensement du Canada. Il a aussi développé une expertise en matière de finances publiques municipales.
Mario a entrepris en 2014 un virage vers le monde de l'immobilier commercial. Il a d'abord été Président, directeur général de l'Institut de développement urbain du Québec. Il a ensuite joint Ivanhoé Cambridge en 2016 à titre de Vice-président, Recherche, un travail qui l'a amené à analyser les fondamentaux économiques et immobiliers d'un grand nombre de marchés à travers le monde.
De juin 2020 à décembre 2024, Mario Lefebvre est retourné à la Banque du Canada à titre de Directeur régional du Bureau du Québec de la Banque. À ce titre, Mario a rencontré un grand nombre de dirigeantes et de dirigeants d'entreprises québécoises en plus de partager à auditoires la position de la Banque du Canada en ce qui a trait à la conjoncture économique au pays et la politique monétaire.
Mario s'est joint à Aviseo Conseil en janvier 2025 à titre d'Associé. Il a été impliqué dans plusieurs études depuis son arrivée, dont une portant sur l’impact potentiel des tarifs américains sur l’économie du Québec. Il livre aussi des conférences à des auditoires variés.

Mario started his career as an economist at the Bank of Canada in 1991, where he worked in both the Research Department and the International Department. He then joined The Conference Board of Canada in 1998, where he first worked in the International Studies Department. He was particularly involved in mandates with the Ministries of Finance of Tunisia, Morrocco, and Ukraine. From 2001 to 2013, Mario was the Director of the Centre for Municipal Studies of the Conference Board, leading a Team of economists in the conduct of economic forecast for each of Canada’s Census Metropolitan Areas. He also developed a deep understanding of Municipal public finance during that time.
Mario took a turn in 2014 and joined the commercial real estate industry. He was first the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Quebec Urban Development Institute, before joining Ivanhoe Cambridge in 2016 as Vice-President, Research. In this latter position, Mario led a Team of analysts that looked at economic and real estate fundamentals in markets from across the Globe.
From June 2020 to December 2024, Mario Lefebvre returned to the Bank of Canada, as Director of the Bank’s Quebec Regional Office. In that role, Mario met with a large number of business leaders from across the province and shared the Bank’s view regarding the Canadian economic situation and monetary policy.
Entering 2025, Mario joined Aviseo Conseil as an Associate. He has so far been involved in several studies, including one on the potential impact of US tariffs on the Quebec economy. Mario also gives speeches to a wide variety of audiences.
